He sold masks in the little trade towns along the river that cut its way through the kingdom. Instead of the usual raft, he traveled on the back of a huge boar that didn’t like strangers. He slept rough in the hollows along the riverbank. Each night, he would carve the next day’s wares by the light of hidden fires. He was smart, and he was careful. They found him anyway. He still kept his magic sword in his bag, and it awoke in blue fire at his call. He mounted the boar and rode into battle, one last time.

The Skinny: You probably already played it today.
By this point, Wordle is a game that needs no introduction. But I am still coming across friends and relations puzzled by the towers of green and yellow blocks on their feeds. So I will make a brief introduction. Wordle began in 2019 as a sort of gift by Josh Wardle for his partner. Wardle, the designer of The Button and Place for Reddit, is known for his parasocial games. But Wordle is almost paradoxically enticing in its simplicity. There are no loot boxes to grind for. Nothing to subscribe to, no gatcha mechanic. Just a new five-letter word every day, and six guesses. The game didn’t even allow sharing until the feature was implemented towards the end of last year. But perhaps it is its simplicity that draws attention in 2022. It’s an echo of a simpler electronic age when the idea of meeting people in faraway places through a screen seemed like magic. In its way, Wordle is punk rock. It doesn’t need to be downloaded from an app store (although certainly, clones have popped up on all of them in the past few weeks.) It doesn’t have microtransactions and ads for the game don’t play 24/7 on YouTube. It’s just a quick little word game you can play every day and share your results. Wordle is a shared experience, and I think that’s key to its success. Having only one word a day, and knowing that everybody else posting their score had the same word, creates a feeling of connection, communication, and competition. That word took you six tries? You had that many correct letters on the first guess? The content is sharable and gets people talking. I like to look at people’s posted patterns and try and guess what words they use. Other users place a great value in getting the word in as few guesses as possible. Wordle is as much a game of deduction as wordplay. With the New York Times’ Announcement that they have purchased Wordle in a seven-figure deal, the future of this little-game-that-could is uncertain. For now, the game is still hosted at the same site and is still free to play. But only time will tell if the paper’s acquisition will mark an end to the fad or elevate Wordle to the same level of cultural cachet as the crossword.
The City expanded in all directions like a crystal. Glass, chrome, and circuitry expanded in every direction. In most parts of The City, you couldn’t see the sun. In some places, you could barely tell which way was up. She’d been born there, and it was all she had ever known. It was a billion-limbed organism that consumed and screamed and polluted: The Infant of the Beast, chewing up people. But it was not all there was. As she rose into the sky, she felt a thrill of anticipation. She would crack The City’s shell, and show them the truth.

The detective lit his last cigarette, knowing the nearest corner store was an hour away by car. Outside the cabin, the tall grass waved in the red light of dawn. They’d been at this all night. Across the table, the suspect combed her fingers through her hair and rested her chin on her palm. She didn’t look at all tired. Cigarette smoke drifted right through her and she didn’t even cough. He hated interrogating ghosts. They just didn’t have the same buttons as the living. “Let’s take it from the top. Where were you on the night you were killed?”

“Please,” the mermaid asked the Sea Witch. “Change my tail into legs like a human’s so I may walk on land.” “Tell me, child. How many legs has a human?” The girl concentrated. “Oh, I should know this. I think three?” The witch smiled and presented her with a potion, along with warnings and instructions she was satisfied the girl would ignore in her haste. When she was gone, the witch’s minion slithered out of hiding. “I thought you were going to steal her voice.” “I was,” the witch said. “But this is going to be so much more amusing.”

Tiger prowls through the jungle, searching for her next meal. She stalks from tree to tree, padding on silent feet. Her striped fur blends into the shadows falling from the canopy. The rest of the forest cowers from her. From the smallest rat to the mightiest boar, they all know better than to risk Tiger’s swift claws. She hunts by stealth because no one else is a match for her. She does not believe in astrology or even keep time in a way that is compatible with such thinking. But never the less, it is going to be her year.

As humanity advanced, the will-o-wisps were forced to learn to adapt. Automobiles made their favorite prey suddenly much more difficult to catch. Highways and GPS devices reduced flickering torches from guiding lights to mere curiosities that were quickly passed. A few will-o-wisps still maintained traditional hunting methods, keeping solitary lairs in dangerous swamps and lonely mountain passes. But most banded together for survival. It took effort and coordination to mimic the solid glow of a streetlight or to become a pair of distant taillights. But if they worked together, they could do it. Humanity advanced, but their monsters kept up.

The boy found the dragon resting on the hillside. It was finally time to put his training to use. “Even the smallest wind can move a boulder,” He reminded himself. He dropped into a fighting stance and let out his war cry. He leaped at the mighty dragon, leading with his feet. He struck a series of blows along the creature’s back and tail, striking the pressure points between the scales. Slowly, the beast turned and glared down at his assailant, then bowed. “Well done, my student. Now go and defend your village.” He returned the gesture. “Thank you, Master.”

Coffee hit the city like a tidal wave. Overnight, the streets were lined with trendy cafes and coffee houses clamoring to serve the hottest new drink. The vintners dismissed it as a fad. They knew their product and the city, and they were sure their new competition wouldn’t last. But as time went on and their bottles collected dust, the vintners sought out the traveling merchants who’d brought the bean into the city. The merchants weren’t without quick wits and soon brought the vintners around with the promise of collaboration. However, their efforts weren’t an immediate success. Coffee wine tasted terrible.
