The picnic had been laid in a field, on a pallet set with fine china, rich food, and sparkling wine. Four cushions, one for each guest, ringed the spread.
“We don’t have time for this,” the first said. She was the oldest of them, and all business.
“Nonsense, my dear,” Said the second. “They won’t start without us.”
“I can’t believe you’re hungry at a time like this,” said one of the twins, his face thin and waxy. His pale sister sat down beside him.
“That makes our whole party, Shall we begin?”
“To Armageddon,” Death said, raising her glass.

“I don’t love it,” the model said.
“Sweetheart,” the designer took her by the shoulder. His hand sunk deep into soft fur. “This is the MET Gala! You have to go big!”
“There’s such a thing as bad attention, Manny. I’m wearing a freaking bear head. Not only does it feel appropriative, but the animal rights people will kill me!”
“The theme is Bear, Mildred. You wanna show up in a onesie?”
“I may as well show up naked, if this is what you’re giving me.” They both froze.
“Hey…” The subsequent BARE fashion line took the world by storm.

Glory Bywater, freelance hunter and consulting mage, listened to the heiress’s request with some confusion.
“If I understand correctly, you require a mansion-sized fireproofing charm for your new pet?”
“That’s quite correct. She’s an adorable little thing, but she breathes fire, you see. I just can’t bear the thought of keeping her outside.”
“I recognize that it may be considered cruel, but have you considered simply removing her flame sacs?” The woman looked at her with contempt.
“I’m afraid that’s out of the question. I require the enchantment.”
“Might I ask why?”
“Because the poor devil will suffocate, obviously!”

Fiction: The Surprise

I was a sailor, and wrecked in a storm, I washed up on a strange shore.
I awoke in the house of a giant, who warned me, “You may go wherever you wish, but stay out of my cellar.”
As I recovered, his warning weighed heavily upon me. I recalled every story of man-eating giants I’d ever heard. Eventually, I snuck into the forbidden room.
I found it stacked floor to ceiling with balloons, banners, and supplies for a welcome party.
“It was going to be a surprise, the disappointed giant said. “But now you’ve gone and ruined it.”

I limp into the bazaar late in the afternoon and eventually find what I’m looking for: A pre-war bike tire patch kit. The sharp-eyed woman behind the counter has actual wrinkles. She might’ve even seen the bombs fall. This is going to be tough.
I look in my pack and see what I have to trade.
When governments fell, money became worthless. Gold wasn’t portable. But there were other systems.
I pull out a near-mint holographic Pikachu card. Flashy, but more common than you’d think. She gives me an inscrutable look, and we get down to bargaining.

“No, no, trust me,” Mimir said. “Pho Sure on Main and 27th Street is where you want to go.”
“And you’re sure they’re the best Thai place in the city?” Odin asked. The disembodied head grimaced.
“Would you dare doubt my wisdom, All-Father? Go, and see for yourself. And maybe bring me back a spring roll as I am trapped forever in this well.”
“That’s just it. How can you review restaurants if you never go out?”
“All knowledge flows to me through the roots of the World Tree. Plus, Ratatosk told me of something the mortals call ‘Yelp.'”

The peace conference was held in Jotunheim.
Eager to impress, the Frost Giants set up the table in their most picturesque snow-covered forest. They filled it with ice crystal chandeliers and a thousand candles. Then the guests arrived.
The Elves complained that the site was too cold. The Humans that it was too cramped, and the Dwarves that it was too bright.
This is historically known as the beginning of the Great Alliance. History also records the deaths of the lead ambassadors, and the newborn alliance’s war against the Giants.
In Jotunheim, it’s called “The Meeting of the Whiners.”

“You buried him with the keys?” Susan asked, stunned.
“It was his dying wish,” Frank said. “He started the store, and it seemed right to bury him with the keys in his pocket.” She just stared at him, her tear-stained face hardened into something cold rage. After a moment, she excused herself and stomped out of the room.
“You have the spares, right?” Naomi asked. Frank grinned sheepishly at her. “Jesus Christ, Frank.”
Susan returned, a phone in one hand and a shovel in the other.
“We’re reopening on Monday. You can either call a locksmith, or get digging.

The stop was like every frontier town: Dusty, with not much visible from the air but the ruins. She set the airship down on the flat expanse of a former megastore.
Her propellers were all the advertising she needed. Within five minutes, townsfolk were congregating, carrying broken-down electronics and walking motorcycles. She’d repair what she could here, buy some of the rest, and take a few orders, in case she found parts someplace else. Maybe they’d be even buy something.
In a week, she’d take off again, headed for the next town. There was still so much to fix.
