Everyday Drabbles #898: The Living Statue

The sculptor brushed a cloth over the statue’s face. It was another perfect masterpiece. All that was left was for it to awaken.
He washed the marble dust from his hands and thanked the gods for his mysterious gift.
He nodded to the painter as he left. He would have preferred to have his work untouched, but such were the whims of culture.
She set to work, gripping her brush lightly in gnarled old hands. She painted the eyes first and then the mouth. The statue yawned and blinked as her paints brought color and life to the dead stone.

Everyday Drabbles #897: Beware of Dog

The sign at the gate said, “Beware of Dog.” The technician stood in front of the fence, toolkit under one arm. He rang the bell again.
There was no answer, so he let himself into the yard. He rounded a corner and stopped short.
A dozen damaged robots, each still tethered to their dock, lurched toward him. They reached the end of their cords’ slack and reared up, growling and barking.
Each of their screens showed a snarling canine mouth. They definitely had the virus.
He’d have to work fast before any of them figured out how to get loose

Everyday Drabbles #896: The Temptation

The devil handed the sleeping man’s phone to the angel with some difficulty. “Listen, you want to know what he does with this thing all day, don’t you?”
“Well, sure. But this seems like something I’d warn him against.”
“Honey, do you even know what a comment thread is?”
The angel looked away, embarrassed. “Well, no.”
“Then you’ve got to study up, my friend.”
“When you put it that way, I should take a peek. For research.” The little angel turned on the screen.
The devil smiled. With his counterpart distracted, both shoulders were finally his. He got to work.

Everyday Drabbles #895: Lord Raven

Lord Raven stood atop his tower and looked down on the city. He could trace his lineage back a long way. His office building was a castle of steel and glass, but his ancestors had reigned from towers of stone.
He reflected that his role was not so different from his forebears, although he preferred the term Magnate to Warlord. The city certainly smelled better these days.
He gave himself a moment to imagine his descendants standing on taller towers, presiding over grander cities. He never considered that somewhere in the labyrinth below was a boy who would be king.

Everyday Drabbles #894: Sunset Rider

The rider appeared every evening just before sunset. They were a ghostly figure on a pale horse, washed in sunset colors ahead and silver moonlight behind.
I spent weeks trying to catch them, but their mount was too swift, their steps too sure, and by the time the Sun slipped below the horizon, they were gone.
One night I lay in wait and finally managed to catch the phantom. The moment I wrapped my hand around their wrist, the sunset paused.
I realized at that moment that the rider not chasing the sunset but heralding the coming of night.

Everyday Drabbles #893: The New Senator

The new senator accepted their stole of office with a slightly jerky bow. A cam in their lower back kept seizing, and they had put off replacing it.
As the first democratically elected automaton, they tried to enjoy the ceremony. After all, the election was only the beginning of their fight.
Many did not approve of equal automata rights, and threatening rhetoric was rising everywhere. The news feeds said violence was all but inevitable.
But experience had taught them that probability was what you made of it. They would execute their function to bring equality and freedom to the galaxy.

Young Men in Love: A Queer Romance Anthology
Edited by Joe Glass and Matt Miner
Published by A Blue Wave World

The Skinny: A sweet collection of short gay romance comics
A pair of pirates just looking for a bit of privacy, a pre-teen looking for his own identity, and a new couple still figuring out their boundaries are just some of the stories in this sweet, romantic anthology. Created by Queer writers and artists across the comics industry, this anthology of six-page pieces runs the gamut from the fantastic to the mundane and from the melancholic to the exuberantly joyful. There is a story here for everyone.
Young Men in Love is a book of stories that go on separate journies but arrive at the same place. Gay love and Queer relationships are more varried than you often see in media, particularly comics, and this book breaks the mold by telling personal, diverse stories that each have a life of their own. This book is as long on charm as the stories are short. There are low-stakes stories about first love, self discovery, and loneliness, and more fantastical stories about discovering your partner is a superhero or a couple falling into a virtual world while replacing a lamp. YMiL isn’t just about love but about acceptance and more importatnly, self-acceptance.
Joe Glass tells a story which feels deeply personal. It follows a fat person as he deals with his body issues as a gay comics fan, coming up against not only the societal expectation that he should be ‘thin’ but also potential lovers that fetishize his weight. Dead End creator Hamish Steele tells a poignant story about loneliness, depression, and suicidal thoughts during the holidays. While not all the stories are so personal,, they all feel important. There is something deeply uncommercial about this collection.
These aren’t love stories about the stereotypical gay characters you would see on a sitcom or in a romance novel written for the female gaze. YMiL is a book of our stories, for us, and that feels vital to me. If you want to see more diverse stories or find new, brilliant creators, writers and artists not on the radar of big-2 comics, you need this anthology.
Young Men in Love is available in print and digital editions from your local comics shop or the usual monopolistic book outlets. It is a deeply personal, highly original, and honest collection of stories that need to get out into the world. I give it my highest recommendation.

Everyday Drabbles #892: The Dancer

He knocked on the dressing room door, awkwardly maintaining the bundle of clothes in his arms. The dancer answered, looking cross.
“The King has asked that you perform for him tonight,” he said.
She looked down at the elaborate costume. “In that?”
“By request of his highness,” he replied. They both stood quietly as a cadre of palace guards marched by.
“We’re almost in the treasury. You only have to keep the king distracted for another night or two, Rosemary.” He whispered.
“Fine. But you all owe me.” She took the intricate and revealing bird costume and slammed the door.

Everyday Drabbles #891: The Archfiend’s Library

The dread archfiend Orbulax stalked through its ineffable library. The non-euclidean structure stretched to infinity, holding tomes of knowledge so blasphemous that even looking on their covers would drive a mortal being mad.
Orbulax ignored those dread grimoires, its eyestalks searching for a particular book. There was no librarian to assist it, although shadows and half-glimpsed forms flitted between the shelves. Orbulax needed no guide.
Finally, it placed a chitinous claw on a volume. Its bulbous eyes widened in delight. It had found what it searched for.
It just had to find out how Lupin pulled off his latest heist.

Everyday Drabbles #890

The great detective set the telegram down on the mantle and picked up his pipe. He looked down at the bustling London street below contemplatively. The irony of his long and storied career being hampered by legal loopholes was not lost on him. But that was all over now.”Well, Holmes?” His partner asked from the side chair. “What does the message say? Is it good news?”Sherlock crossed the parlor and planted a kiss on his forehead. “It is the best news, Watson. The news we have been awaiting. We are finally in the public domain! We are free!”
