The badger propped the book against a tree trunk, handling it awkwardly with her teeth and claws.
Instinct told her to dig holes and hunt for mushrooms. It told her to go do badger things. But she knew if she got up now she would be lost forever.
She sat and read through the book, although she didn’t know what she was looking for. The cramped writing hurt her eyes, and the words made her brain itch, but she kept going.
The witch had cursed her with this shape. Her spellbook had to have a way to change herself back.

As she scrambled over the rubble of the abandoned city, she missed the days when its subways were the envy of the world. Finally, she found what she was looking for laying under a pile of fallen buildings: Giga Hero Mechazan, or what was left of it.
The pilots had bailed out, abandoning the city to the kaiju.
But we can learn more from our losses than our victories, she thought, as she opened up the mech’s innards searching for hard drives.
The next generation of giant robots would do better. She would take their world back from the monsters.

The longboat sailed through the fjords, the sleek, powerful craft filled with mighty warriors. They had raided well in the southern islands, and their boat was heavy with gold taken from those cowards who could not defend themselves.
The giant stood waiting in the bay. The deep water only lapped at his ankles. They tried to steer around him, but the giant reached out and snatched their boat out of the water. He brought the vessel up to meet his eye.
“What have you brought me, my friends?” He asked in a booming voice. There’s always somebody bigger than you.

Everyday Drabbles #685: The Key to the Kingdom

She received the ornate silver key with her other regalia on the day she became queen and asked her seneschal what it unlocked.
“Why, nothing, Your Majesty. It is symbolic.”
“The key to the kingdom, as it were?”
He chuckled. “Quite right, ma’am.”
As her reign progressed, she couldn’t get the old key out of her mind. She took to wearing it looped on a chain and wandered the corridors at night, looking for a keyhole.
It was three months before she found the door in the lowest depths of the palace basements and discovered how deep her kingdom went.
