“It’s just a number, Helen,” he said.
“I know that, Gerald, but still, It makes me, I don’t know.” She glanced nervously at the road sign ahead of them. “Can’t we just go another way?”
“All the other routes add hours to our trip. I thought you wanted to get to the bed and breakfast before dark.” He poked at the tiny map on his phone screen. What he wouldn’t do for a TripTik right now.
“I do, but, do we have to take Route 666?”
He sighed. Their romantic getaway to Hell, Michigan was off to a rocky start.

Fiction: Research and Development

The villain burst into his head scientist’s office without knocking.
“Do you have any idea what you’ve done?” He demanded.
She arched an eyebrow. She juggled a lot of projects, but freedom from consequences was one of the perks of the job. “Enlighten me.”
“I asked you to supply my army of minions with gravity knives.”
“I did!”
“I meant knives that opened by gravity, not made of gravity! They did considerable damage to my volcano base!”
“Don’t be such a baby,” she said. “Gravity is the weakest of the fundamental forces. Wait until you see my Quantum Flavordynamic Oven!”

Fiction: 5(n) Guys

The mad scientist’s cloning machine was complete! He’d tested it (on himself, naturally) and the five replicas were perfect. They weren’t quite as brilliant as he was, but they were healthy, and loyal.
But he was out of funds to continue his research.
Some time later, a car pulled up to the drive-through at a local burger joint.
“Greetings! Recite your demands into the listening device!”
The driver pulled through and picked up their order. As she turned back into traffic, she turned to her passenger.
“You ever notice how the guys at this place all look the same?”

Fiction: The Invader

The mech suit rumbled along the sandy track, making more noise than the pilot liked. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. The foundation of the colony was supposed to be glorious, even easy!
He had been assured that the locals would be either awed by their technological majesty or cowed by their firepower. So why was he the only unit left?
He spotted something laying in the road and paused. It was a broken toy, a mech suit action figure with the arms and legs ripped off. By the time the message registered, it was already too late.

Fiction: After the Accident

“How long has it been since we crashed on this god-forsaken planet,” the old man asked his robot companion.
“Forty-one years, nine months, twelve days, and… my apologies, my chronometer isn’t so accurate these days.”
“And no hope of rescue.”
The robot shrugged. “That’s the danger of superluminal exploration. Our distress signal won’t reach human space for another hundred years.”
“At least you’ll still be there to tell them what happened,” the human said. They didn’t have the heart to tell him the only thing that kept them going was the man’s maintenance, something they couldn’t do themself.

Fiction: Coffee Break

The Old One had been working his ineffable plan for eons, his grand design impossible for lesser beings to understand, his great purpose written in the stars themselves. Soon the time would be right.
The elder god decided to take a break. Remaking the universe in one’s own image was thirsty work. He stopped for a cup of coffee.
The dull-eyed girl asked him for his name, and, on a lark, he whispered every dread syllable, watching with anticipatory glee. His drink arrived moments later
“Venti no-foam decaf latte for Cathy!”
The carnage left investigators baffled for years.

“How’s it going?” She asked in my earpiece. I could barely make her out over the rushing air.
“The Flying Suit definitely works. I’m mostly comfortable and maintaining a relative altitude of twenty feet. We’ve attracted quite a crowd, too.”
“That’s wonderful!”
“But I do have some complaints.”
“Such as?”
“Two things. First, we need to work on the efficiency of this thing. I’m trailing black smoke.”
“And what’s the second?”
“We’ve got to do something about the location of the exhaust port. I know you said the seat of the pants would be most stable, but it’s terribly embarrassing.”

Fiction: Home Prophecy Test

After she finished peeing, she pulled her skirt back up and washed her hands. She stared as the liquid reacted to the reagent in the bottom of the little clay vessel.
It didn’t take long. There was a pop, and a spray of blue sparks. The rune burned into the bottom was unmistakable, and identical to the two tests beside it.
When her husband came home, she sat him down at the table.
“I went to the alchemist this morning.”
“Then we’re…” he said, unable to finish. She nodded and patted her belly.
“He’s going to be the Chosen One.”

Fiction: The Photographer

After the plant closed, he found himself unceremoniously retired, and depressed. With nothing else to do, he spent his mornings by the Falls, watching the water flow ceaselessly past, constantly eating away at the rock and making electricity for towns he’d never be able to afford to visit.
He watched the tourists come from all across the world to visit the place he lived and would someday die. He watched them fumble with their cameras, from chunky Kodaks to pocket-sized digicams to cell phones.
He learned to ask ‘Would you like me to take your picture?’ in thirty languages.

“No, no, trust me,” Mimir said. “Pho Sure on Main and 27th Street is where you want to go.”
“And you’re sure they’re the best Thai place in the city?” Odin asked. The disembodied head grimaced.
“Would you dare doubt my wisdom, All-Father? Go, and see for yourself. And maybe bring me back a spring roll as I am trapped forever in this well.”
“That’s just it. How can you review restaurants if you never go out?”
“All knowledge flows to me through the roots of the World Tree. Plus, Ratatosk told me of something the mortals call ‘Yelp.'”
