For the tenth time, I tossed the die and it came up five.
It didn’t look special, just a little red plastic cube with white pips. It wasn’t weighted or shaved. But the die always gave me, and only me, a five.
I collected my winnings from the bet and put the die safely back in my pocket. I wrote it off as a fluke of probability.
When I came home from the bar, I gave it another toss.
This time it came up a four. I tried again, twice more with the same result.
The die was counting down.
