Everyday Drabbles #751: Motivation

I stood chatting with a merchant as the last of his goods were loaded onto my ship. He looked over the unusual rigging quizzically.
“Do you not move by sail?” he asked.
I chuckled. “No, but we can raise them in an emergency.”
“But I see no sign of a steam engine. How will you leave port?”
“That’s a trade secret, sir, but I can guarantee your goods will arrive in Boston a week before your competitors’.”
Below the waterline, the giant goldfish, raised and trained by my grandfather, strained against its harness, eager to carry us to the ocean.

Everyday Drabbles #750: Morning Delivery

Well before dawn, he rolled out of bed and dressed in his crisp, clean white uniform. The shirt had bright brass buttons, and the hat with its stiff black brim was iconic. He smiled at himself in the rearview mirror as he started up his truck.
His first stop was the distributor, where he made small talk with the foreman as the back was loaded with the day’s deliveries.
As the sun rose, he made his rounds, leaving a bottle on every writer’s doorstep.
The Idea Man enjoyed his work, even if none of his clients ever gave him credit.

Everyday Drabbles #749: The Collaboration

The throne is a collaboration of the great civilizations. The stone for the base was chosen and carved by master craftsdwarves. The most elite of the Elvish woodsingers formed the back, and the seat was woven by the greatest hillfolk weavers living. The gnomes assembled and enchanted it. The elder peoples all working in harmony for the common good.
All the Humans needed to provide was someone to sit on it: me. I sit in my flowing white dress and look out at the sea of expectant faces.
Not feeling any different, I close my eyes and deliver the prophecy.

Marvel’s Squirrel Girl: The Unbeatable Radio Show
Written by Ryan North
Directed by Giovanna Sardelli
Staring Milana Vayntrub & a full voice cast

The Skinny: The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl is back! In podcast form!
While no longer on the monthly shop shelves, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl was one of my favorite comics while it was being produced, and I was sad when the series ended with no further impact, either in the comics, or making its way into the MCU.But Squirrel Girl and her wacky cast of animal-themed fellow heroes by night / NYC college students by day are back as a new scripted podcast! Written by USG series writer Ryan North and staring Milyana Vayntrub, who has voiced the character of Squirrel Girl / Doreen Green in a number of animated Marvel projects, the podcast picks up where the comic ended, with Doreen coming to terms with her carefully protected secret identity being leaked to the public. Now, as a way of integrating the two parts of her life, Doreen and her friends have been given a slot on the ESU college radio station. Doreen is ready to give life advice and expound on her superheroic exploits, but as per usual, she may have leapt before she looked.North’s writing still has the same wit and charm of the comics, and carries forward the delightfully manic comedic tone. North’s unmistakable writing style is on display, and these characters feel much the same as they did on the page. And the college radio trappings felt very familiar. I felt an almost cringey sense of nostalgia for the low budget station of my own college days. The podcast also brings back North’s slightly skewed vision of the Marvel Universe, with a few cameos and even celebrity guests. While the podcast is a jumping on point, and a delight to listen to, I did find myself missing series artist of Erica Henderson. And while it was fun to catch up with these characters, newer listeners who haven’t gone back through fifty issues of their adventures may be a bit lost.Marvel’s Squirrel Girl: The Unbeatable Radio Show is available from Sirius XM but can also be downloaded using the podcastcher of your choice from Apple Podcasts. If you are a fan of fun, classic superheroes, who both happen to eat nuts and kick butts, give it a listen.

Everyday Drabbles #748: The Dull Forest

The forest was sentient, and most people avoided it. Not because it was dangerous or violent, but because it was eccentric. Unfortunately, I had an urgent errand in the town on the other side and had no choice but to pass through it.
I walked as quickly and quietly as I could through the dark woods, taking care not to tread on a flower or snap a single branch. But my efforts to avoid the forest’s attention were in vain.
“Hey,” a flowering vine whispered in my ear. “How’s it going?” I sighed, preparing myself for a long, dull conversation.

Everyday Drabbles #747: Familiar

The cat allowed his human to seat him on the little throne and drape him with garlands of wildflowers. He shook them off, but she distracted him with a plate of chicken livers, so he let her continue, then curled up and fell asleep.
The witch completed her preparations for the spell, taking away the remaining food and checking the candles. She felt a little sad as she began chanting. He’d been a sweet cat. But what she needed was a familiar. She summoned in the spirit.
The cat awoke to the strange sensation of being someone else.

Hugh Likes Comics: Free Comic Book Day 2022!

Hello readers! One of my favorite holidays is again upon us. Yes, that’s right! It’s Free Comic Book Day is tomorrow, May 7, 2022! And this year I will be at my favorite local shop to peruse the offerings and help support local business and some of my favorite creators! Free Comic Book day started in 2002, the free promotion has grown over the years, and is always celebrated on the first Saturday in May. There are a staggering number fo comics to choose from, from well-known superhero franchises, to kid-friendly cartoon tie-ins, and serious indie titles., all free for the taking.
Just remember they’re free for customers, not the shops, so please be sure to buy something and support your local business!
Here is a selection of the books I’m looking forward to this year:

Galaxy: The Prettiest Star FCBD Edition
Written by Jadzia Axelrod
Art by Jess Taylor
I have been a fan of Jadzia Axelrod’s writing for years, and I am beyond excited for her upcoming graphic novel from DC Comics. Always clever and full of charm and heart, I can’t wait to see her writing for ‘the big two.’ in this story of a intergalactic princess in hiding. And the art is gorgeous as well.

Avengers / X-Men / Eternals Judgement Day FCBD
With a whole bunch of talented creators, this one tees up Marvel’s big ‘summer blockbuster’ of popular superheroes dusting up for reasons. But this year’s scuffle revolves around the desecration of the corpses of Dead Space Gods, so it should at least be interesting. I’ve been a big fan of the swerve X-Men took in the past few years, as well as the Eternals relaunch, so I am looking forward to this one.

Barbaric #1 FCBD Edition
The story of a barbarian cursed to do good and his sentient battle axe with a drinking problem, Barbaric plays fast and loose with the tropes of low fantasy. I have an issue or two of the ongoing series, and if that’s your style of fantasy, I recommend giving it a look.

Marvel Voices FCBD #1
The Marvel’s Voices anthology series has been an excellent collection highlighting marginalized creators along with characters, and this FCBD collection seems to be a collection of some of the best of those stories. It doesn’t look like it has the one where Mystique kills Professor Moriarty, but still a worthwhile pickup.

FCBD 2022 KAIJU NO 8 & SAKAMOTO DAYS
I have heard great things about both of these manga series, and I’m looking forward to picking up this sampler of both to get a better fix on whether they’ll be joining my to-be-read pile.

There is an incredible variety of books coming out this year for Free Comic Book day. You can check them all out, along with their handy Local Comics Shop locator at their website: FreeComicBookDay.com

Everyday Drabbles #746: Crane Wife

One day Naoko was walking through the woods and came across a crane caught in a trap. She freed the bird, and it seemed to bow in thanks before flying away.
That night, a beautiful woman appeared at her door, saying she was her wife. She let the woman in, and they were happy for many years. One day, Naoko spied her wife weaving when she thought she was alone. She’d been the crane all along!
The crane wept, saying that now she had to leave forever.
Naoko only laughed and hugged her wife before changing back into a fox.

Everyday Drabbles #745: The Ghost in the Bay

The ghost appears on the rocks outside the harbor, where the sea is rough and treacherous. She is a luminous woman in white, shrouded like the dead.
The spirit is a sensation in the paranormal community. Every year, ghost hunters pile into boats by the hundreds, sailing heedlessly into the dangerous waters to try and catch a glimpse of her.
When she made her bargain with death, the ghost meant to fashion herself into a warning. She wanted to stand on the breakwater like a lighthouse.
But the tourists cannot hear her over the surf and the roar of engines.

Everyday Drabbles #744: Worlds of Adventure

The bounty hunter sat in the cockpit of his ship and looked out at the stars. A galaxy full of adventures, and he couldn’t decide where to go next.
“If I might make a suggestion,” his droid companion said. A hologram of a barren desert appeared over the instruments. “This remote planet is associated with an unusually high number of beings-of-interest. On the other hand, there is always something going on in the capital.” The scene shifted to a world of towering skyscrapers.
The bounty hunter tapped his helmet thoughtfully, then set a course for the capital. He hated sand.
