Everybody knows the rules for getting out of Faerie. Never make a promise or a bargain. Don’t eat or drink anything. Carry a piece of forged iron.
Less well known is ‘Don’t ask for directions from a tree-man.’ But as I made my way through the foggy heath, I was lost and took the risk.
Tree-men don’t think in directions and landmarks, though. They navigate by root feel and water flow, and we were soon both hopelessly confused.
But another rule of navigating Faerie is that the land will bring you where it wants, as I was about to discover.
