The City: 095: Chandra

Chandra saw the man by the door boot the hero before he got the gun away from the kid, then point the weapon at him.
“You left your goddamn phone on?”  Norm asked.  There were four that she could see, all with guns.  There were others in the back, doing something in the vault.  She just came in to check her balance before logging off.
“Sorry sir.  Something weird is going on outside.”
“Something weird?  You idiot.  You’re off the team.”  Norm never got a chance to fire.  The glass doors burst inward and the zombie was on him first.

Keith was no hero.  He’d read a lot of articles on Boot Syndrome, and it did nasty stuff to you.  Some people went into comas and just never came out of them again.  So he wasn’t going to try and stop those robbers.  Better to let them take what they wanted and let Midas sort it out.  But if there were an opportunity… He considered the accolades from his hiding place in the manager’s cubicle.  The boy, he was the weak link.  But how to get his gun?  That was when the kid’s phone went off.  Keith sprang into action.

“Welcome to Midas Bank,” Felicia said with more enthusiasm than she felt.  It was nearly 5, City Time, and she was ready to close up.  The boy was blond, young, and handsome.  He had a very nice smile.
“Thank you,” he said, and he leaned in towards her.  “I’m interested in making some deposits.  Can you help me get started.”  He winked at her.  Normally, she would have immediately blocked such a creeper line, but she giggled instead.  He was just her type. The receptionist failed notice the crowd that came in behind him, or the gun under his coat.

Frank whistled, but the others just stared at them, as though Warren had released a deadly snake in the two room apartment.  Mina eyed him suspiciously.  “How did you get so many clean guns?”  She asked.
“CPD headquarters has been going nuts all day.  It was easy to sneak down to the supply terminal, fake my boss’s access, and grab them.  We’ll hit the bank and be gone before he knows they were fabricated.”
“But how will we bond with them?” Ingmar, the youngest of the group, asked.  “We don’t have clearance for that.”
“Leave that to me,” Renee said.

Paulo nodded at the American punk girl.
Do you think the one has to do with the other?  Is Midas screwing with the trains to manipulate the market?
Xue shook her head.
Too expensive.  Midas owns too much of The City to wreck it’s productivity.
Maybe a rival?  Ingmar offered.
The timings too close.  The announcement about the trains came before the sale.
I got a peek at the meeting.  The new CEO’s avatar looked weird.
Weird how?
I don’t know.  Out of sync.  Kind of creepy.
I’ll look into it.  Paulo offered.  He was always trying to impress Dawn.

Dawn hadn’t been very specific, but it sounded like they would need a car, at the very least.  The only friend Xue knew that had one was Ingmar, but he and Dawn did not get along.  Great.  She booted her phone’s translator and connected.
“Hi, it’s Xue.  I need you to do me a favor…”
Traffic was glacial all throughout the city.  It took them nearly two hours to reach the financial district.  The sight of Dawn dangling helplessly from a gargoyle was worth it though.  Ingmar laughed so hard he could barely record her annoyed frown without camera shake.
